The talent and dedication of the team behind ESI Monitor and FutureTrack are what make us who we are today. This week, we want you to get to know our fantastic Head of User Experience and Sustainability, Fred Betley.

Fred has been on the team since the very beginning, when it was only him and ESI Monitor's Founder, Marc Laine. He has been instrumental in developing our sustainability services, from the first iteration of the Environmental Business Operations Framework all the way to FutureTrack.

Fred's passion for sustainability is reflected daily through his work ethic and enthusiasm. He is happy to go the extra mile for clients, get into the nitty-gritty details of carbon footprinting, and even share his wealth of knowledge through the occasional blog post.

We did a little Q&A with Fred. Learn all about his background, current role, and more, below.

Q: What is your background in sustainability?

A: I studied Global Sustainable Development and Sociology at the University of Warwick and graduated in the very first cohort! I’ve since joined many different forums and pressure groups focused on sustainability and climate change. I am an IEMA Carbon Footprint Analyst, and would love to expand my skill set in social sustainability, environmental protection and conservation, and leadership.

Q: What is your role in ESI Monitor/FutureTrack?

A: My main role is to support our clients to engage with FutureTrack and ensure all of their sustainability ambitions can be fulfilled. I’m always looking for feedback and finding new ways to overcome the obstacles that organisations face when approaching sustainability change. It’s not in the DNA of most organisations to prioritise or transition towards sustainability, so I also spend a lot of time on research & development to see how we can combine industry insights, academic findings, and client testimonies to build FutureTrack into something that plants the seed of sustainability within organisations.

I aspire to do a podcast/more educational content to bring the sustainability discussion and new perspectives to more people and organisations in the future.

Q: Describe what drives you?

A: I’m driven by the need to overcome the big obstacles that face our current generation. I’m driven by building relationships and community. And I’m driven by making a positive impact.

Q: What do you want to achieve with ESI Monitor/FutureTrack?

A: I want us to help reshape our economy towards being the biggest driver of positive change, and to help replace greed and inequality with wholesome values and accountability.

Q: What’s the best thing about working for ESI Monitor/FutureTrack?

A: The excitement of learning, building, and helping at the same time, and constantly getting better at all three.

Q: Tell us about your interests outside of work

A: I’m a musician at heart. I want to keep writing songs and making music with lots of inspiring people. I also love slacklining, climbing, and generally being creative.
